‘A Tale of Two Towers’ is a DVD on the Santa Maria Tower in Comino and the Dwejra Tower, both of which are held in guardianship by Din l-Art Helwa

The DVD by Din l-Art Helwa, was launched at an event at the Ministry for Gozo, at the end of last week by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono.

The DVD depicts the story of the towers, the construction of which was recommended by Military Engineer Giovanni Rinaldini, who was brought over from Italy in 1599 by Grandmaster Garzes, to give his expert advice on the defence of Gozo. The text is narrated and was written by Din l-Art Helwa volunteer, John Barnes, while acting parts have been entrusted to Albert Gauci, as Engineer Rinaldini, Terry Shaw as Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt and Paul Barnes, as Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellar.

The project was funded by the Ministry for Gozo throught its eco-Gozo scheme for Non Governmental Organisations.

During the launch the Minister for Gozo praised the initiative of Din l-Art Helwa and said that “through this informative and educational DVD, the important history of the two towers is now available to all those interested in the heritage of the island.”

The Minister continued by saying “a ‘Tale of Two Towers’ is an added tool for advertising the heritage of our country and will also be a wonderful reminder for tourists, both local and foreign, of the experience offered on a Gozo holiday.”

The Gozo Minister praised the work carried out by Din l-Art Helwa in Gozo, particularly in the restoration of historic sites such as these towers. She added that “thanks to the help and dedication of NGOs that are involved in the preservation and promotion of Gozitan heritage, more sites are now being restored and made accessible to the public.”

A ‘Tale of Two Towers’ DVD which is 26 minutes long, includes information on the need and importance of these towers, the problems faced that were associated with their construction and financing, the people involved in the design and maintenance, as well as those responsible for the preservation.

The funds collected from the sale of this DVD will be used for maintenance of other sites around Malta and Gozo, which fall under the responsibility of Din l-Art Helwa.
