Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has announced that the Bill to amend the Constitution is have its first reading today. The anouncement was made when Parliament met at 6pm this evening.

The Bill is a result of Monday’s informal meeting of members of the European Council, all EU member states with the exception of the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic agreed a new Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline and introducing more automatic sanctions and stricter surveillance within the euro area, in particular by introducing a “balanced budget rule.”

The Prime Minister said after Monday’s meeting that the Government had agreed the Fiscal Pact following amendments to a clause in Article 10 which Malta had not been happy with.
