The Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech recently celebrated Mass for Gozitan writers and journalists to mark the Feast of St Francis De Sales, their Patron Saint, The Mass was held at the church of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Victoria.

The Bishop said, “Today’s civilisation has not only given us the means of communication that are important channels for disseminating information, but the same means are also necessary so that man can participate in the shaping of the same civilization. In our society who does not have the possibility to participate actively in the media is being deprived of an important civil right.”

“To date for the National television station to give news about Gozo it must be a tragedy, news from the court or any Governmental activity. It is regrettable that for an event in Gozo to be reported, Gozitans must either kow a Maltese journalist, or pay for the service.”

“Surely in Gozitan society we have many wonderful experiences that match with similar events that occur in Malta, but while the latter is reported correctly, what happens in Gozo is buried at the time because there are not the means to do so!”

“It’s time that the State remedy for this right of Gozo! It is true that there have been attempts in the past but they are few. Though in many areas the State recognizes Gozo as a region with particular needs, the issue of communications in Gozo needs to be addressed.”

“In this respect the Church if Gozo offers a model because both RTK and Radio Marija produce and broadcast programmes directly from Gozo. This should be carried through with other stations, particularly National channels.”

The History of a nation is not complete if it systematically omits events of the whole region.
