In light of recent changes to the Law course at the University of Malta, the Law Students’ Society (GhSL) said that it “would like to thank the relevant authorities who, during recent years, have been instrumental in bringing about these much awaited changes.”

“The Law Students’ Society is highly appreciative of these reforms and feels honoured to have actively taken part in this exercise since they reflect some of the suggestions found in the ‘Law Course Reform Report,’ which the society had submitted to the relevant authorities in October 2010. One of the reforms is a complete revision of the entry requirements needed for a student to be able to enter the Law course, which in recent years, had become far too lax,” the Society said.

The Law Students’ Society continued that it “believes that students should be assessed on their achievements and not on their failures and to ensure that quality is not sacrificed at the expense of quantity. Students should not accomodate the shortcomings of the system, the lack of human resources and the current lack of seating capacity in lecture theatres at University. Conversely, the Law course ought to reflect its prestigious past and as a result the need for such a reform was highly felt.”

In its report GhSL said that it had proposed other measures with the aim of providing the best possible holistic education. The report also suggests major changes to the course structure and therefore GhSL “believes that, while the changes taking place in 2014 show a positive direction, further discussions are needed to ameliorate future law courses.”

GhSL concluded that it “believes that the amendments approved by the University Senate are fundamentally important for the Law course so that it may continue to grow in the right direction.”
