The Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono recently presented the first payments to selected artists chosen for the Road Arts Scheme, launched in December 2010 by the Ministry. “By the end of this year around 13 pieces of art will have been completed and placed in various public areas around Gozo. These are the first drafts of works of art that were commissioned, after being selected from 43 submissions,” the Minister said.

The Minister “explained that this is one of the initiatives of the Ministry for Gozo in the Action Plan Eco-Gozo from 2010 to 2012. As a result of this scheme, everyone visiting the island will have the opportunity to enjoy works of art that are not only inside the four walls of a museum, but outdoors and in public spaces. The idea behind this scheme is to have commissioned works of art that reflect today’s times, thus Gozo becomes a museum in contemporary art.”

The Minister concluded by saying that “these pieces of art be an added attraction to the projects of the Ministry for Gozo, such as the Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria and the Three Hills Gardens in Marsalfon, which are expected to be inaugurated in the near future.”

The materials to be used in the commissioned works of art include bronze, wood, terracotta, mosaic, limestone and stainless steel.

Overall in the Arts Scheme Road 64 artists participated. These included entries from Gozo and Malta, as well as foreigners who reside in the islands, which together submitted 120 draft works of art.
