The Federation for Hunting & Conservation (FKNK) said in a statement today that it did not agree with the restrictions imposed by the Government on the spring hunting season which opens this month.

Lino Farrugia and Joe Perici Calsascione, of FKNK said that that the hunter’s federation “had been led to believe by the Government that the season would be longer, but that did not happen.” FKNK had proposed that the season should have been open for 30 days from April the 7th to May the 7th.

Mr Farrugia also said that the federation did not agree with the individual quota imposed on hunters and the special fee of €50 to be eligible to hunt in spring, as hunters already have to pay fees and licences.

“Almost 6000 hunters applied for spring hunting in the first two days of registration last week,” FKNK said.

Furthermore, they said, hunters should have been allowed to hunt on Sundays. Many of them worked during the week and could not take leave, they said.

Lino Farrugia and Joe Perici Calsascione said they urged hunters to observe the law and said that those who don’t would be disciplined. “Hunters should obey police orders and the law.”

Lino Farrugia also said that hunting should have been allowed on Sundays and public holidays, stating that many worked during the week so therefore could only hunt on weekends.

The FKNK officials concluded by saying that FKNK’s main concern was that the hunters rights were being denied to them and that this was not a politically motivated issue.
