The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) had drafted two policy documents to set out a planning framework whereby land can be utilized for storage purposes in Malta and Gozo. Open storage signifies the keeping of any goods, material, merchandise, or equipment; not enclosed within a building or structure, with the exception of administration and ancillary facilities.

Alongside this document, MEPA also prepared a proposed way forward on the Areas of Containment as identified in the Central Malta Local Plan (CMLP), North West Local Plan (NWLP) and the South Malta Local Plan (SMLP). Areas of Containment predominantly accommodate industrial or commercial related activities located outside development zone. These areas are characterized by existing operations which from time to time may need to upgrade upon their operations in order to continue to operate effectively.

The Authoritysaid that it is extending the period for public consultation until the 16th May 2012. Individuals and organizations are being invited to send their submissions on these draft documents.
