Mario Galea, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Communty Care, during a courtesy visit to MMDNA said that, “during the year 2011, Malta Memorial District Nursing Association (MMDNA) nurses paid 495,000 visits within the community. This meant an increase of circa three thousand visits on the previous year. During 2011, 442,000 visits were paid to the elderly.” The government contracts the service of community nurses from the association.

During the year 2011, MMDNA nurses had 117,000 cases of general cure. They gave 19,000 injections and dealt with 207,000 diabetes cases. They also conducted 12,000 post natal visits.

MMDNA has been active since 1945 and had an important share in Malta’s reconstruction after the war from a medical aspect.

Mario Galea said that MMDNA presently has a staff of more than 70 persons working on a full time basis. This meant that on average each person conducted more than 7000 visits yearly. This meant that each day an MMDNA nurse did 17 visits.

MMDNA services include general nursing and general care of patients, like blanket baths, prevention and treatment of bedsores, toe nail cutting, injections and treatment of diabetic patients and so on.

Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea said that the government is committed to increase and offer health quality services to the elderly. MMDNA’s service is another committment of government’s investment for community care.
