The EkoSkola Committee within Gozo College Nadur Primary School was successfully chosen to participate in the third edition of the HSBC School-Community Climate Change project.

The Committee was awarded the sum of €950 to spend on a number of initiatives. The Committee formed by school children elected by children themselves and several parents and volunteers created an action plan using the Seven Steps of the EkoSkola empowerment process.

A new reverse osmosis was purchased to cut the use of plastic bottles by over 90%. A ‘Happy Healthy Lunch Workshop’ was organised where a nutritionist explained to parents what makes up a typically healthy lunch for children at school.

This was followed by a lunch workshop and afterwards the children were able to partake of the delicious food that had been prepared. They were then shown a presentation regarding healthy lifestyles.

A Mini London Olympic Games 2012 for all the school’s students was organised at Nadur Youngsters football pitch in which cooperation, sharing and respect formed the the three keywords of the event. Parents also participated in a fitness course held during school hours.

The Committee stressed the need to diminish the emissions which are having a negative impact on our common climate. For this reason, children were encouraged to use public transport for outdoor learning activities as well as increasing the number in the School Walking Bus to encourage more children and parents to come to school on foot.
