Lawyers in Gozo have issued a joint statement, initiated by Labour MP Justyne Caurana, following the stabbing yesterday of a man inside a Gozo courtroom during a sitting.
In the statement the lawyers said it was shocking that a stabbing had taken place and another man had been injured inside the court building.
They also said that they may not attend sittings in the Gozo Court until security arrangements are carried out.
The lawyers said that appeals for improved security at the Gozo Court had been made for years. These appeals were intensified after lawyer, Dr Michael Grech, tragically lost his life in an incident on the island.
The lawyers expressed their solidarity with the Magistrate, the injured parties and the court staff
The presence of security officers, a metal detector and scanning equipment, were called for by the lawyers. Continuing that “only a single police officer being present was not enough security.”
“The authorities need to assume their responsibilities to address the current unacceptable situation,” the statement concluded.
The statement was signed byJustyne Caruana, Carmelo Galea, Grazio Mercieca, Kevin Mompalao, Jean Paul Grech, Damian Bigeni, Georgine Schembri, Simone Grech, Deborah Mercieca, Joshua Grech, Monica Vella and Alfred Grech.
