The Ramblers Association of Malta said in a statement this afternoon that “the subject application, to build 24 flats on the side of the Wied il-Ghasel valley, was, rightly so, rejected by MEPA in 2007. The developers appealed, and the original decision was overturned in 2009 and the permit granted.
“The objectors appealed against this latest decision, on the basis that the permit violates several planning policies because it allows development on the side of a valley that is a protected nature and tree reserve, and MEPA is to decide on this appeal on Thursday 21st June. In the meantime, under the old planning regulations, the developers could carry on with the destruction of the valley.”
The Ramblers Association of Malta said that it fully supports the stand of Harsien Patrimonju Mosti and the 24,000 signatories who are against this “so-called development.”
The Ramblers Association of Malta said that “as quoted in the Times of 15th June, Prof Ian Refalo, acting on behalf of the developers and using carefully chosen words, has this to say on the authenticity of the 24,000 signatures,”
“In the letter, also sent to the two party leaders, Prof. Refalo said he neither had “the advantage nor the luxury to verify the purported 24,000 signatures claimed by Harsien Patrimonju Mosti, nor the level of information and commitment of those induced to sign”.
The NGO continued, “as far as we know, all these 24 signatures were actual hand-written signatures, not on-line signatures (although these are also accepted nowadays). A copy of these signatures was presented to the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. We are sure that Harsien Patrimonju Mosti would be glad to present Prof Ian Refalo with another copy, so that he can verify for himself the authenticity of these so-called ‘purported’ signatures.”
“MEPA has the chance to present its new face in favour of the environment and against unsustainable development and to show that strong arm tactics will not prevent it from saving Mosta valley from further destruction,” the Ramblers Association of Malta concluded.

Leave Wied il-Ghasel as it is. No big head can improve on it. Future generations will curse all those who for the sake of money ruin Nature’s work.
For heavens sake MEPA, Don`t developers understand the words “NO” “REJECTED” an “ODZ” The luxory of appealing should be revoked once and for all. I totally agree with Mr. Darmanin. Can Gonzi explain to his great grand children, why there are no playing fields for them to play in, or walking tracks down the valley for them to enjoy a weekend outing. Because at this rate there would not be an inch of green space any where on the Maltese Islands. Just wasted my time!! Mr. Gonzi is running MEPA.
