This afternoon, Emergency Response and Rescue Corps Lifeguards at the Blue Lagoon assisted eleven tired swimmers in the space of just fifteen minutes. The swimmers themselves called the lifeguards for assistance when they found themselves in difficulties due to an increase in sea currents. The swimmers did not have sufficient strength left to reach land, so they all had to be towed ashore by E.R.R.C. lifeguards.

Yesterday, a person suffering from a dislocated shoulder was also assisted by the E.R.R.C. lifeguards and was then transported to the Gozo General Hospital by means of Lifesaver 1, Lifesaver 1 is the ERRC hydro ambulance.

The E.R.R.C. said that it recommends that before entering the sea, swimmers must always take heed of the flag which is attached to the lifeguards tower. The flag colour code is the means by which swimmers are notified if the sea is fit for swimming or not. If unsure do not hesitate to ask the lifeguards present and to help minimise accidents, it is very important to follow any instructions given by the lifeguards.

The Lifeguards service at Blue lagoon is being run on a daily basis and is made possible due to financial support from the Malta Tourist Authority. Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo – eco-Gozo, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department.
