The much-awaited VOICES concerts, sponsored by the Vodafone Malta Foundation, are back this year with the theme “Dream a Little Dream.” The ten performances by the 200 strong choir and a live band will take place between the 3-7 and 10-14 October at 7.30pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. The performance of the 7th October will be a matinee, starting at 3.30pm.

VOIVES is made up completely of volunteers who dedicate their summer every two years to raise funds for deserving charities – the sum raised to date has reached over €1.5 million.

Addressing the press conference to launch the concerts, Antonello Gauci Chairman of the VOICES Foundation explained that the choice of this year’s theme was particularly appropriate: “We hope that the dreams of many people will become reality with the financial aid which we give to organisations which are involved in worthy community projects.”

Speaking on behalf of the title sponsor, Chairperson Mrs Gemma Mifsud Bonnici said, “The Vodafone Malta Foundation is extending this vote of support to VOICES yet for another year, since we are constantly on the look out for contributions towards the improvement of the Maltese society and at the same time we also believe in the worthy causes chosen by VOICES. This is not only a gifted choir that attracts large audiences but their concerts have also become a national fundraising event.”

A mixture of pop and rock classics from across the decades, together with more contemporary songs, will be sure to appeal to VOICES audiences. This year the repertoire includes hits by the Beatles, Adele, Sting, Katy Perry, Zucchero, Queen, Abba, Alicia Keyes, Pink Floyd as well as tributes to Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

Also present at the press conference was Nora Macelli, representing the St Jeanne Antide Foundation whose project The Gamra Community Social Work Project in Fgura was chosen as the lead project for the VOICES “Listen to the Music” 2010 concerts.

This project supports vulnerable families in the community and has been financed by VOICES for two years (2011 – 2013). She explained that this outreach programme is carried out through home visits which are undertaken to establish a rapport, trust and a readiness to tap into support opportunities that have the potential of improving the quality of life and skills of at risk individuals and families.

The lead project is chosen by VOICES after proposals are submitted by beneficiaries and vetted by a Beneficiaries Advisory Board. The rest of the funds are then distributed among the remaining NGOs which have to fulfil certain criteria. This year the lead project is Mamma Margherita, administrated by Osanna Pia Home (Salesians), which will provide flats for young men who have nowhere to live.
