Youth for the Environment (Y4TE) recently paid a visit to the volunteer stand located next to the enclosure protecting the as-of-yet unhatched turtle eggs and stopped for a chat with one of the volunteers.

Y4TE said that the volunteer Karen was just finishing off the first of her two shifts of the day, but still in high spirits she told Y4TE, “We had a lot volunteers when this started out, but the time passes, now we’re on double shifts.”

“Karen is a volunteer from Nature Trust Malta, a non governmental organisation which is taking care of surveilling the eggs during the day. For the duration of the night, the Malta Resources Authority (MRA) has employed 3 guards to safeguard the eggs. It is therefore safe to say that the eggs are very secure and under constant surveillance,” Y4TE said.Karen assured Y4TE that “on the whole the public have been very interested and thankfully compliant with the new rules imposed for the safety of the eggs and apart from a few dispersed incidents, the surveillance of the eggs has gone off without a hitch.”

“Neighboring establishments, the Radisson Hotel and the owners of the surrounding boathouses have also been very willing to help, with an immediate action plan in place for all lights to be switched off the moments signs of hatching are detected.” Karen told Y4TE.
