Workers from various departments within the Ministry for Gozo have been engaged in a programme of projects to clean-up the roads and beaches around the island following the powerful storms that hit the island through Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

Gravel, tree branches, rocks and other materials carried by the stormwater were strewn across the roads and beaches. Some roads had become almost impassable, particularly those leading to Mgarr, Xaghra, Nadur and Victoria including the road leading to the hospital.

Intensive work was also undertaken in Xlendi bay where five trucks removed reeds and two other trucks transported material to the valley. The road was also cleared between the park and the area known as il-Kantra. Marsalforn Valley and Ghasri were also cleared.

Work was carried out today clearing ditches in Kercem and Munxar. Materials such as bamboo that had collected in the marina area of Mgarr were also collected and taken away. Roads around Qala and Ta’ Pinu are to be cleared of the debris that has collected along the sides over the next few days.

The Ministry for Gozo said that the restoration of Gozo’s drainage system implemented last year in the valleys took most of the impact of this storm. A large volume of water collected in Zejta valley and Marsalforn valley, thus reducing considerably the water and debris that was swept towards Marsalforn Bay.

Workers from the Gozo Civil Protection Department were some of the first on the scene, the Ministry said, at the height of the storms, with rescue teams assisting people in cars caught in flood water, some cars were also carried away by the powerful stormwater, the department also went to the aid of people affected by the stormwater in their homes.
