According to data issued by the National Statistics Office, in the second quarter this year, meat production and the producer value declined by 20.1 and 15.9 per cent respectively when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011.

Meat production in the second quarter amounted to 2,640 tonnes, a drop of 20.1 per cent over the comparative period last year.

This was brought about by drops in the production of pigmeat and broilermeat, which fell by 27.0 and 13.7 per cent respectively. On the other hand, an increase of 1.1 per cent was registered in the production of beef.

During the period under review, the producer value of animals slaughtered at licensed slaughterhouses declined by €1.0 million (-15.9 per cent) to €5.3 million, when compared to the corresponding period in 2011. This was due to a decline in the producer value of slaughtered pigs and broilers, of 22.9 and 13.5 per cent respectively.

On the other hand, an increase of 7.1 per cent was registered in the producer value of beef. During the period under review, the average carcass weight of slaughtered pigs and broilers declined by 9.0 and 15.9 per cent respectively.
