Cast announced for Turandot at the Teatru tal-Opra AuroraThe Teatru tal-Opra Aurora has announced the main cast for the opera Turandot which is to be performed on Saturday October the 13th.

The theatre said that the “star appearance of world-renowned soprano Maria Guleghina in the title role, announced some weeks ago was a major boost for ticket sales.”

Maria Guleghina will be flying from New York, following her performance of Turandot at the METOpera, the week before, returning after the performance in Gozo. She is to be flanked by tenor Valter Borin in the celebrated role of Prince Calaf. Borin and Guleghina have collaborated in a production of Nabucco at the Arena of Verona and are meeting up again for their Gozo debut. It will also be a role-debut for Valter Borin.

In what promises to be a night of operatic grandeur, this world-famous duo will be complemented by some of Malta’s finest, namely Maltese soprano Miriam Cauchi who will mark her Aurora-debut with the role of Liù and Gozitan bass Noel Galea, participating again at the Aurora, this time in the role of Timur.

The Theatre said that “over the past few years the Aurora’s winning team has ensured a spectacular production with artistic direction and set-design by Novella Tabili, mounted and constructed by Teddy Mizzi and Anthony Buhagiar, painted by Paul Falzon and illuminated by Donald Camilleri. All these members are on board for yet another successful venture. Props are entrusted to fellow Gozitan artist Dennis Mompalao.”

Colin Attard will be directing the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aurora Opera Chorus for the 2012 production of Turandot at theTeatru tal-Opra Aurora in Victoria.

For this year’s Turandot, a limited number of €70, €60 and €45 tickets remain, with the €80 tickets being sold out.

“Following the recent engagements of big stars like Eva Marton, Nicola Martinucci, Elena Zelenskaya (Bolshoi), Michéle Crider, Juan Pons and Neil Shicoff (Metropolitan / La Scala), the star appearance of Guleghina is another concerted effort by the Aurora management to go a step further and regale the Maltese public with nothing short of world-class opera,” the theatre concluded.

All my life, I’ve toured lots of opera houses around Europe and I can say that the yearly Aurora Opera house is one of the few (I dare say the only one) operatic performances in our islands, that really shows professionalism, love and passion for the sake of opera. This year’s performance was truly splendid. Looking forward for next year’s Un Ballo in Maschera!!!
