The Great Siege of Malta commemoration held at Xaghra

This morning Xaghra Parish, in conjunction with Xaghra Local Council commemorated the Great Siege of Malta in a ceremony which took place in Victory Square, Xaghra.
The ceremony started at 9.00am with a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass led by Archpriest Carmelo Refalo.
This was followed by a re-enactment by the Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organisation, which included the triumphal entry of Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette and the proclamation of the 8th September as a National Holiday in Malta.
There was a a speech by Joseph Hili and the ceremony ended with the laying of wreaths in front of the Great Siege monument, led by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debonow.
The monument was temporarily set up in Victory Square for the commemoration ceremony.
The XHRO is a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to commemorate the Great Siege of Malta on the 7th September in Xaghra Gozo. This organisation is devoted to the promotion of the main historical events related to Xaghra. It seeks to reenact a specific event in history by the incorporation of activities and dress into an interactive presentation that seeks to give the observers a sense of stepping back in time.
