In a statement issued this morning by the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, it said that it wished to clarify that the existing trees are to be retained along Senglea waterfront.
“In view of the concerns raised after the public consultation, it has been decided to retain the existing trees along the Senglea waterfront.
“The necessary works will be done to avoid the lateral spread of the tree roots to ensure that the embellishment works are safeguarded.
“The project contemplates shifting the existing trees to favour the new road alignment, the Ministry’s statement concluded.
The statement from the Ministry has come in the wake of protests by various Environment groups and letters from individuals to the Prime Minister.
Environment NGO Flimkien ghall-Ambjent Ahjar are holding a press conference this morning in order to launch a video and a petition aimed at safeguarding Malta’s trees. FAA said it has produced this short video to raise awareness of the social, environmental and economic benefits of trees.
FAA said that the petition to the authorities is being organised in view of the wholesale destruction of trees at Fgura, Zabbar, Cospicua, Luqa, Zebbug, Valletta, Mdina, Sliema and Mellieha, and the proposed destruction of over 2,000 more at Salina, Kappara, Floriana and Senglea.
This event is being held at the Senglea Promenade beyond the Macina where the mature trees have been earmarked for imminent uprooting only to be replaced by invasive, non-indigenous toxic trees at the taxpayer’s expense.
The petition is being launched by Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar Tree Group, in conjunction with Ramblers’ Association, NatureTrust Malta, Friends of the Earth (Malta), Malta Organic Agriculture Movement, Greenhouse, Youth for the Environment and the Gozo University Group.

Given the fact that these Government authorities have no idea how to properly prune a tree does anyone believe that they know how to move them without killing them? If you care about the trees that remain on Malta and Gozo then please sign this petition today and do your bit to protect them.
