Over 5,000 piggy banks will be distributed to schools across Malta and Gozo as well as main shopping outlets at the launch of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank campaign which this year marks the ninth anniversary.

The President visited Bank of Valletta’s Head Office in Santa Venera where the preparations of the piggy banks for distribution in all schools in Malta and Gozo were in the final stages. The Malta Girl Guides together with volunteers assisted by having prepared all the Piggy Banks that were distributed by the Armed Forces of Malta and volunteers in all the schools in Malta and Gozo.

Mrs. Margaret Abela, accompanied by Bank of Valletta officials, will visit twenty schools in total during this campaign. The main aim of this campaign was to promote the value of donating without expecting anything in return.

Chief Executive Officer Charles Borg thanked the President for giving the bank the opportunity to support this year’s event.

“The Bank takes great pride in its Community Relations Programme, which is one of the largest on the island – and the Malta Community Chest Fund is one of our main beneficiaries. We have pledged to match the amount collected from the Piggy Bank Campaign but we also sponsor Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina and Tisjir mill-Qalb, as well as encouraging our staff to take part in the Fun Run by putting up half the registration fee. The Piggy Bank Campaign is very close to our hearts because it involves children and teaches them the importance of altruism, a value which is very much a part of our Community Relations Programme,” he said.

President George Abela expressed his gratitude to all those who had donated money over the years, noting that the amount collected had grown regularly, explaining how the €2.1 million collected last year had been used to help both non-governmental organisations as well as individuals requiring medical care that was not available through the Maltese health system.

“This campaign is important because it teaches our children the value of helping others who are less fortunate, and instils in them more awareness of the fact that everyone can help in their own way. We are sure that this year’s collection will once again show what a wonderful and generous nation we are,” he stated.

All funds collected through the Piggy Bank campaign together with a donation by Bank of Valletta will be presented during the live broadcast of L-Istrina mill-Qalb 2012 on December 26th, the organisation of which is managed and produced by The Malta Community Chest Fund.
