The Single Market Week calendar of events included an activity aimed at Gozo business. This was held on Wednesday, when the EC Representation partnered with the Gozo Business Chamber for a business breakfast which attracted a good turnout of Gozitan business stakeholders.
The Head of Representation, Martin Bugelli, opened the proceedings referring to some of the achievements made throughout these 20 years of the EU’s Single Market, and pointing out that there are a number of challenges which are yet to be addressed.
He appealed to Gozo businessmen to take on the challenges and opportunities despite their inherent disadvantages, particularly their geographical double insularity.
Gozo Business Chamber president Michael Grech gave a presentation in which he highlighted niche areas which Gozitan business ought to tap into, in order to bring added value to the market. “A leap of faith is needed” he stressed in this regard, especially when it comes to innovation and use of the digital environment.
The future agenda of the European Single Market was then discussed following a presentation by European Commission official Charmaine Hogan. She gave an overview of main proposals being put forward by the European Commission especially through the so-called “Single Market Act.”
The meeting concluded with contributions by Malta Enterprise officials Mark Pizzuto and Maria Zammit Micallef who spoke about the services Malta Enterprise offers to businesses in their quest to internationalise their operations, particularly through the Enterprise Europe Network.
The event gave an opportunity to Gozo businesses to discuss the Single Market realities within their specific context.
