Another academic year has got underway at the University of the Third Age (U3E) Gozo, which was started on an initiaitve of the Ministry for Gozo 16 years ago.

As in previous years a Mass was held at the Cenre in Ghansielem. The 55 participants on this year’s courses were then invited to enjoy a small reception.

This year each participant attending U3E, will present a traditional Gozitan recipe which will eventually be included in a book of recipes to be printed.

Other initiatives taken by U3E in recent years, included the book, ‘The dance of Life,’ which was published in 2004 in cooperation with the Ministry for Gozo, the European Centre of Gerontology of the University of Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority. In 2011 a compact disc was released entitled ‘Gozo Memories.’ The disc includes photographs, writings and other materials reflecting memories of the past sixty years.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono joined the participants for the first session of this year.

The U3E course is being coordinated by the Elderly and Special Needs Sections at the Department of Customer Services within the Ministry for Goz. This section also coordinates assistance to the elderly in their homes, the services of meals-on-wheels and handyman, as well as activities inside the center during the day. These services facilitate life for elderly Gozitans to be able to live a normal life within their community.
