The History Department of the University of Malta organised a two day conference, entitled ‘A Wonderful Future Beckons for Young Gozitan Historians,’ at the Ministry of Gozo, under the auspices of the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, on the 19th and 20th of October.

Attendees included Professor Juanito Camilleri (Rector of the University), Professor Richard Muscat (Pro-rector), Professor Dominic Fenech (Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts) and Professor Victor Mallia-Milanes.

Stefan Said and Charles Daniel Saliba, both educators at Sir M. A. Refalo Centre for Further Studies, were invited as speakers. Mr Said presented his plenary paper, ‘Machiavelli’s The Prince: the influence of Classical History’ in which he showed how Machiavelli treads an ambivalent path throughout his treatise, embracing or rejecting notions found in seminal classical works, such as Plato’s The Republic, Aristotle’s Politics, Cicero’s On Obligations and St. Augustine’s City of God.

In Mr Saliba’s plenary paper, ‘Skyjacking – its character, effects and decline,’ he analysed the origins of skyjacking, its change in character and effects on humanity, as well as the Mediterranean problems that prompted so many cases in the area.

The conference proceedings are to be published in the near future and will contain both papers.
