For the coming Christmas season, ‘Teen Spirit,’ a group of teenagers who meet at the church of St Anthony the Abbot, Xaghra, Gozo, are building a large eco-themed Christmas tree.eco-themed Christmas tree taking shape in Xaghra VillageThe tree, which over the Christmas season will stand in St Anthony’s Square, is eight metres tall by four metres wide. This unique tree is made up of an iron structure, onto which are fixed more than 6000 large green and white plastic bottles.

Throughout, 2012 the people of the village of Xaghra were asked to collect their plastic water and soft drinks bottles on behalf of the ‘Teen Spirit’ group, who then cleaned and sorted them out.

During the past month the students have been involved in fixing the bottles to the iron structure of the tree, which when finished will also be lit up with coloured lights.

Through this initiative, while expressing their creativity, those involved in ‘Teen Spirit’ were able to learn about the importance of contributing towards environmental protection and also raise environmental awareness among the people who helped in the collection of the bottles and those who will, over the Christmas season, visit the area to view the tree.

The members of the ‘Teen Sprit’ group invite everyone to visit over the Christmas season and New Year to enjoy the tree as well as the large mechanical cribs that will be on display in the church of St Anthony the Abbot in Xaghra.
