Administrative data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation indicate that during June 2012, the number of persons registered as employed increased by 1 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year, reaching 151,559.

Over the same period, the number of registered unemployed went up by 7.8 per cent to 6,697. The total labour supply stood at 158,256 persons.

When compared to June 2011, full-time employment within Administrative and Support Service Activities increased by 545. The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation also recorded an increase in employment of 433 persons. On the other hand, employment within the Manufacturing and Construction sectors decreased by 394 and 266 respectively.

Private sector employment increased by 1.76 per cent or 1,913 when compared to June 2011. The highest increase in employment was mainly registered within the Transportation and Storage Sector (+629 persons) and the Administrative and Support Service Activities Sector (+566 persons). Drops in private sector employment were recorded in Manufacturing and Information and Communication activities.

These two sectors accounted for 75 per cent of all drops in the private sector. During June this year, the public sector employed 40,707 – a decrease of 1.0 per cent when compared to last year.

The number of employees in June increased by 1.1 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2011. In comparison with June 2011, the number of full-time employees within the Transportation and Storage Sector increased by 486 while the number of employees within the Manufacturing sector decreased by 379.

During the month under review, the number of self-employed increased by 0.3 per cent, with the highest increase being recorded among the Administrative and Support Service Activities (+46 persons).

When compared to June 2011, total part-time employment went up by 5.9 per cent. Part-time employment within the Accommodation and Food Service Activities went up by 9.0 per cent or 910 persons, compared to the corresponding month in 2011. Increases were also recorded within the Wholesale and Retail Trade and Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles.

In June 2012, the number of part-timers who held a full-time job rose by 4.6 per cent, reaching 23,551, with the highest increase being recorded among females (+617 persons). Persons who held part-time job as their primary occupation increased by 6.8 per cent.

The two activities that registered most growth in part-time employment were Accommodation and Food Service Activities and Wholesale and Retail Trade.
