The Qala Local Council has expressed its concern in a statement today over the transport of fireworks through the village after it has been unloaded from boats at Hondoq ir-Rummien.
The Qala Mayor, Clint Camilleri, said that fireworks are often unloaded in the summer for the feasts on the island, at a time when the bay was full of people and then driven through the village.
Whilst it did not object to fireworks used in Qala being unloaded at the quay, the Council said that it objected to all other fireworks destined for Gozo from Malta, should be transported through Qala, via Hondoq.
The Council had said that it has also written to the Commission two years ago, when the Gharb explosion occurred, but the authorities had not acted upon it, to this time.
The Qala Mayor called on the authorities to respond and act on the request by Qala Local Council and its residents.

Well don for the council backing the vice mayor This will make a much more impact on the decision makers
When 40 lorry loads of quarry waste were dumped at Dwejra the Gozo Minister read about it in the Sunday papers over breakfast. Now the Qala Mayor is reacting at last to calls made by his deputy Paul Buttigieg in the weekend papers. Wouldn’t it be of great benefit to the village if the people who were supposed to be representing them were on the ball rather than having to rely on their deputies to do their job?
@ James
Agreed 100%. Looks like Qala’s mayor is trying to gain political kudos on the back of Paul’s genuine efforts on behalf of Qala (a village he obviously cares deeply for). Well done Paul, and all the best in your present and future endeavours.
