Ex-Servicemen who completed their career in the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have set up a new association. The ‘Assocjazzjoni Suldati Pensjonanti’ (ASP) has been purposely formed to work in the interests of its members and of army widows, as well as for those who would in future be benefiting from a Government Treasury Pension.

During its first inaugural meeting, held at the GWU’s Workers’ Memorial Building in Valletta on Monday, Mr. Joe Cachia addressed the first 100-plus members present, thanking them for their attendance and support, as well as explaining the aims and intents of the ASP.

The ASP’s public relations officer, Mr. Gino Lombardi, also encouraged those present to publicize the foundation of this new ex-servicemen’s assocation amongst those who were not yet aware of it, so its ranks could swell appropriately.

The President of Pensioners’ Associations affiliated within the General Workers Union, Mr. Lino Debono, also addressed the ASP members gathered, and he was joined by Lieutenant Colonel Mario Schembri in auguring success to the ex-Servicemen and their dependents.

The next ASP general meeting is now scheduled for January 2013, and in the interim period a provisional committee has been brought together led by its President Mr Joe Cachia, who is assissted by Mr. Anthony Grech as Secretary, Captain Sander Borg as Treasurer, Mr. Mario Fabri as coordinator, and committee members Mr. Francis Chircop and Captain Joseph Debono.

Well done this type of organisation requires specific external help in relation to other forms of benefits. It has been well established in England for many years and is continuing to grow as a result of continuing conflicts around the world. A great place for focused information and support as well as social aspects where experiences can be exchanged
