Two primary schools within the Gozo College were awarded the Green Flag in a ceremony held at the Nadur Primary School, as part of the annual EcoSkola Gozo Seminar.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, presented the flags to Xaghra, their second one and Nadur, which was their third one. The Victoria Primary School was presented with a Silver Award.
The seminar included the introduction of two new environmental programmes in schools in Gozo – The Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) and Learning About Forests (LEAF).
The Minister for Gozo congratulated the schools on their achievement and said that Gozitan children who participate in Ekoskola are part of a family of 11 million children in 53 countries worldwide.
The Minister also said that the two new environmental programmes will be a valuable teaching tool for young children, calling on all schools to participate in YRE and LEAF, saying that these are good inittiatives in encouraging a greater willingness to recognise, appreciate and love of the surroundings.
This seminar was also addressed by Mr. Vincent Attard, Coordinator of Malta Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE Malta). It was attended by teachers and students from ten Primary Schools within the Gozo College.
The Green Flag award is an international recognition awarded to eco-schools who promoted an environmental and sustainable developmental education in their schools.
The Eco-Schools programme was launched in Malta in 2002 by Nature Trust (Malta) as the Malta representative of FEE. The programme is now being run in the majority of the schools in Malta and Gozo, making it one of the biggest and most successful environmental programmes in the Maltese Islands.
