Gozitan author Charles Daniel Saliba has recently launched two new books: Idjomi ghalina t-tfal and Qwiel ghalina t-tfal. These child-friendly books, designed in full-colour, are intended to help children learn idioms and proverbs in a straightforward, comprehensible fashion with plenty of examples.

These books include idioms and proverbs collected under different themes; definition of each proverb or idiom; the use of each proverb or idiom in a sentence; and three different exercises for each theme catering for different levels.

In 2010 Charles Saliba published two books on the same subject, named Idjomi Maltin ghal studenti ghaqlin and Qwiel Maltin ghal studenti habrikin but these were intended for a more mature audience.

However when Saliba in 2011 was invited by Professor Rui João Baptista Soares, the President of the International Association of Paremiology, to the “city of proverbs,” in Tavira, Portugal, as a main speaker where he presented his research ‘Maltese proverbs: a reflection of Mediterranean history and culture?’ he was impressed by the work done by this association especially with children.

The author then decided to make it a point to publish these two new books so as to promote Maltese idioms and proverbs to the younger generations.

These two books are ideal companions to the Maltese language series Malti ghalina t-tfal used in many primary schools to teach Maltese. As expected these books follow the latest developments in Maltese orthography.
