Last Friday, the third day in the Christmas Octave and the feast day of the Holy Innocents, the Xaghra Local Council organised the fourteenth edition of the annual Christmas Concert ‘Puer Natus Est’ at the Collegiate, Basilica and Sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady under the auspicious patronage of H.E. Dr. George Abela, President of Malta.
This annual concert forms an integral part of the Christmas festivities organised in Gozo. This year, the Council invited the ‘Voci Angeliche’ Choir (which is the Xaghra Parish choir) to perform a number of music pieces, accompanied by a small orchestra under the direction of Mro. Dr. John Galea. The choir, led by Mrs Grace Vella, performed sixteen different pieces and in some of them, there were a number of soloists who showed their talent to the congregation present.
During the interval, Xaghra organist Ivan Attard performed the ‘Sinfonia Pastorale’ by Mro. Emmanuel Galea whilst a collection was made for the Malta Community Chest Fund which is administered by the President to help individuals and families with special needs.
Speeches were made, by Xaghra Mayor, Mr Joe Cordina and Xaghra Archpriest, Mgr Carmelo Refalo. The concert, presented by Maltese presenter Mr Etienne Schembri, ended with the interpretation of ‘O Holy Night’ which was sung by the choir with the participation of the invited orchestra.
After the concert, a reception was held at the Xaghra Youth Centre for the choristers and their families together with the foreign residents in Xaghra.
The Xaghra Local Council would like to thank all those involved in the organisation of this concert. Special thanks goes to all those businesses who offered financial assistance (sponsorship) to help the Council in organising this cultural activity with which we ended the year 2012.
The Xaghra Local Council would like to wish a Happy New Year to all the Xaghra residents, “May the New Year bring with it prosperity and happiness!”
