FKNK request to stop foreigners roaming is ridiculous – AD

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, has said that “The request by the Hunters’ Federation to stop foreigners roaming the Maltese countryside is unbelievable. Malta is a free country where public land belongs to everyone. Malta is also part of the European Union and therefore every Maltese and European has freedom of movement. It is ironic that while all Maltese are free to settle down, work or study in any of the 27 European countries, the Hunters’ Federation is proposing blocking entrance to foreigners to certain parts of Malta. This is absurd.”

Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairman and spokesperson for Sustainable Development and Home Affairs, said, “The presence of foreign environmentalists monitoring the countryside is a clear indication that the international community is preoccupied with Malta’s non-adherence to basic environmental rules which have a transboundary impact. Abusive hunting in Malta and Gozo is giving all of Malta a bad reputation. Alternattiva Demokratika The Green Party has always stood up against these abuses”.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “In parliament, AD will insist for the abolition of spring hunting, in line with the EU birds directive, and for continuous enforcement against hunting illegalities.”

It is a shame that the voice of common sense should come from outside Malta. When will Maltese politicians address the issue of deranged hunters? On the lead up to the elections, it doesn’t seem like any time soo. Sadly.

I have just read the artical by the hunters? Being a foreigner my self and living on Gozo, my pension is transferred into a local bank, I pay rent for my apartment to a gozitan, I spend my money on local produce in local shops and drink in local bars. I wonder how many people are there like me and how much do we contribute to the local economy. I am not dependant in any way on the local or national authority for anything financially and I have paid tax all my life to my home country which contributes substantially to the EEC Burget which Malta and Gozo benefit from exstensivley
I beg to question what would the economy be like if all us “Foreigners” decided to leave on mass ? And a freeze on EEC Grants?
Would the hunters think any differently ? Of us foreigners. I suppose its a little like being charged extra for services and the additional bureaucracy we have to endure and what was that about being treated equally being all members of the EEC?
