A 59-year-old man from Xewkija, Joseph Dingli, has been fined €1,000, after having been found guilty of falsifying documents to help an Egyptian man obtain a work permit.

Joseph Cordina, president of the Gozo Football Association, testified that he had suspected that documents he had received, regarding an Egyptian man called Ali Moursi Ibrahim, were false.

When confronted by the police Mr Ibrahim confirmed that he could not play football since he was injured but wanted to remain in Malta since he would be drafted into the army if he returned to his own country.

Letter heads of the Gozo FA and other Gozitan clubs were found stored on Mr Dingli’s computer. The retired auditor admitted to having falsified contracts on letterheads of Sannat Football Club and of Xewkija Tigers FC.

When questioned with regards to the names in the letters and the contracts that he wrote in Mr Ibrahim’s name, Mr Dingli said that he knew the people involved in the various clubs and he simply wrote their names down.

Mr Dingli was found guilty of falsifying documents which were used publicly so as to obtain a work permit for Mr Ibrahim, to the detriment of the Maltese government.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera ordered the accused to pay the fine within six months or face a prison term.

Police Inspectors Joseph Cordina and Ian Joseph Abdilla prosecuted.
