This year’s national campaign ‘Grow a Tree’ organised by the School Arbor Committee ended on the 19th of May with a prize giving ceremony organised at the National Agricultural Research and Development Centre, Ghammieri.

This annual competition is open for all schools of Malta and Gozo having the scope to enhance students to plant more trees while increasing awareness on our natural environment. It is of utmost importance that children learn to grow trees from a very young age so as they can contribute to our environment.

This year’s competition saw seven schools participating which among them planted 2,669 trees. The school growing the largest number of trees for the second consecutive year was St. Aloysius’ College where they walked away with two from six prizes.

Dr. Chris Ciantar, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs was present for this event. He explained that this the year government has planned to plant 30,000 trees under the campaign Tree4U. Some of the trees grown in the School Arbor Competition will contribute to reach this target. Dr. Ciantar continued that it is very important not to do any damages to trees since it takes very long for trees to grow. The Permanent Secretary praised teachers for the good work they are carrying out with students in this sector.

Apart from this campaign, School Arbor Committee also organizes walks to school children every January to commemorate Arbor Day which is celebrated on the 16th of January. The committee said they would be very happy to have even more schools participating in this campaign.
