Lidl supermarkets and unemployment in Gozo

Careers with Lidl Malta
Hello to all my Gozitan friends,

Just as a matter of interest, I was recently reading the new supermarket Lidl’s webpage, where they were asking for staff in Malta. With the rising unemployment in Gozo, would it not be a good idea if a permit were issued for Lidl to have an outlet in Gozo.

It would benefit the people of this beautiful island, help the younger generation to gain work and of course last but not least the price index would be very, very low as compared to the prices in some local shops.

As foreigners living on Gozo, we often shop at Lidl in Malta, due to the fact that there are very good bargains every week direct from mainland Europe.

So all in all, a Lidl supermarket here in Gozo would be very effective and good for the people of Gozo, and they of course woudn’t have to travel to Malta as we currently do, it could be here on their own doorstep.

Just an idea.

Regards & Love to Gozo and its wonderful folk,

I heard that there is going to be a 2nd Lidl on plan for Gozo, probably in the Qala area , the sooner the better.

    5. Eliza says:

If this is true, there is going to be twice as much car exhaust in Qala

      • Dieter says:

nevermind the car exhaust, car exhaust is everywhere not just in Qala, think of the young Gozitans that are unemployed and the jobs |Lidl’s generates, not forgetting the fresh produce straight from the Italian market and all the goodies that goes with Lidl’s i think think that Lidl in Gozo is a God- sent.

        Eliza Hondoq would be an ideal place for a Lidl supermarket 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

      • Jeff Mead says:

I agree Hondoq would be the ideal place for another lidl, there is the water plant(?) that is just in ruins which could house Lidl, then perhaps do away with the kiosk and the absorbent prices, lidl is much much cheaper and closer to the beach – what more does one want. ready made backed bread, plenty of different cool drinks and ice cream, plenty of FRESH food to choose from for less then then any corner shop or a kiosk, think about it mepa you know it makes sense.

      • Peter says:

        @ Jeff Mead

        Very well said Jeff.

    6. Asta says:

i like the fact that now finally we have lidl on the island of Gozo, not only cheaper then the old fashion corner shops but also the shelves are soon emptied the moment they are refilled, i have even seen many locals queueing outside buying not one item but many of the same. i hope that in time just as in Malta lidl will multiply in other areas of Gozo. At last the youngsters in Gozo will be able to apply for a job at the supermarket which will cut the number of unemployed school leavers. Good Luck to the managment.

    7. Eliza says:

A store very similar to Lidis opened up in New York. The prices are cheaper than all the other grocery stores. The lines are too too long to pay even though they have so many cashiers. People come from all over to get to this store which means people throughout Malta and Gozo will shop there so its going to be a very crowded village.

    8. James A. Tyrrell says:

I don’t think Gozo needs any more Lidl stores. It’s not as if the island is massive for God’s sake. There is a Lidl store there and no matter where you are on the island you can get to it in about 20 minutes maximum. I won’t comment on the Hondoq idea as I usually don’t respond to idiots if I can avoid it. As for jobs we have a pretty large Lidl store in my town and the most you ever see in it at any given time is about 4 so I don’t think it’s going to do much to challenge unemployment. What they do need is an express checkout as I often walk out due to the length of the lines of people waiting at the usually one open till. You should have noticed by now that Lidl don’t take over run down previously developed sites to build their stores. They prefer nice virgin land and the last thing Gozo can afford is to hand over precious virgin land to foreigners in order to build supermarkets. Personally I don’t like their food and never shop there for foodstuffs. The only thing I buy from Lidl’s is cat litter and the odd hardware item.

      • Andre' says:

Well we only got your opinion on this subject of more lidl stores on Gozo Mr.Tyrrell, others including ourselves will differ, i say Gozo need more competition, which will cut out the middle man and the high prices some charge for old stock, not forgetting the unemployed in Gozo will finally get a job that does not need them to travel to Malta day in day out in all weathers, at least Mr.Tyrrell we can agree on this Yeah, in my opinion Sir, these youngsters are entitled to find a job locally same as the Maltese, although Gozo is small, but improving tremendously over a short period of time, and i also noticed that the very same people that rejected the idea in the first place are now the very same once lining up outside to stock up, they have finally seen the light, and noticed the difference in prices, and to me that’s what counts, what i have left in my pocket for the same items i used to buy at the old CORNER SHOPS.

      • James A. Tyrrell says:

Yes Andre you must all be very pleased at the fact the small corner shops are being put out of business by foreigners. Something to be proud of I suppose given the years when they were there for you at all hours. By the way another thing you will find after a year or so and probably after a lot of the smaller shops have been forced to close is that Lidl start putting their prices up. That is what has happened at our local Lidl store. As for your comments on jobs surely the young people of Gozo deserve more than the minimum wages they will get from the very few jobs created by Lidl. I would have thought they would be setting their sights higher than that but perhaps I’m wrong and they are willing to accept what crumbs they are offered.

    9. Kerry says:

I cannot understand how anyone that lives in Gozo can argue that Lidl is good for the island. Have you been to your local shop in the past week or so, they are deserted, they are dying, this is not competition it is annihilation.

There are 7 shops in one village, Nadur, each supports an extended family say of 5, how many employees do Lidl have 20-30? Its not hard to do the maths on employment. Then consider the evil middleman, the local small delivery company and of course the suppliers, Gozitan’s or Maltese, the money stays in the country, not making some foreign billionaire even richer.

      • Andre' from Belgium says:

With due respect Mr.Tyrrell i have no idea where your lidl’s shops are situated, by all account not on these islands, so please do not mix the 2 countries this is Gozo and people here are reasonable when it comes to raising prices, i do not believe for one sec, Lidl in Gozo or in Malta would do as you say, they have more sense, HENCE THE COMPETITION YEAH., as for the corner shops well you said it nothing lasts for ever, and sooner or later just like us we fade away to the never never land and so will the corner shops that are-or used to be OPEN ALL HOURS. IT IS CALLED PROGRESS! good day sir.

      • Andre' from Belgium says:

Mr.Kerry to the contrary the money does not go to the foreign billionaire, but in actual fact stays for the maltese economy, just like in the Uk-Holland-Belgium- Germany- NY etc etc., now in case you do not know it there is another supermarket apparently a relation to the Billionaire you mentioned , its Aldi very similar but lower prices so i heard hence the competition again!! Please remember corner shops-all good things come to an end sooner or later just like a flower one dies a new one takes over. thats life my friend.

    10. Peter says:

Please can we stop talking about Lidl instead we can talk about how can we solve unemployment and the improvement of the disastrous roads in Gozo.

      • jennyanne says:

Let’s stop being stupid – Lidl is great for the people of Gozo and if you were sensible you would know that we have all been making the pilgrimage to the San Gwann Lidl ever since it opened anyway – in the long run, sadly, the bigger supermarkets like The Duke and Arkadia will feel the pinch unless they can offer a different, higher quality product – Waitrose for instance. The usual small corner shops will still have the bread and egg trade every day. If you can all weather the storm of the next few months it will settle down again.
However this does of course not address the Gozo unemployment problem – one that I suspect exists in all small islands and to which there is no real answer – except “move away” – it’s not Lidl’s fault it’s just how it is……….

    11. Peter says:

      @ jennyanne

This comment is adressed to the wrong person.

    12. frank conlin says:

i shop at Lidi in Aberdeen scotland now I will be able to aquire the same items when go back to gozo this is great news also i agree that its good for employment for our youngsters in gozo

      • James A. Tyrrell says:

Frank rather than eating what you eat at home why not try some of the local food? Just a thought. That’s the idea of going somewhere new on holidays. No doubt you are disapointed because you can’t find deep fried Mars Bars!

      • frank conlin says:

ha ha sorry james i dont eat junk food also i do buy from local shops have a nice day

    13. peter browne says:

the local stores should do the right thing and match the prices that Lidl is offering. the party is over.

      • James A. Tyrrell says:

Peter the small local stores can never hope to match the buying power of a global discount supermarket chain like Lidl!

    14. Sarah Springham says:

Since Lidl opened I have shopped there twice to buy wild Scottish pheasant, merely because I can’t purchase free range meat in Gozo. I’ve only been living here since January so if anyone can tell me where I can by such meat in Gozo I’d eagerly buy some. Otherwise I shop at my corner stores for practically everything.

      • Peter says:

Ms Springham you can buy a wild dove instead of a wild Scottish pheasant. There are many hunters going around in Malta and Gozo so you can buy from them 🙂

      • frank conlin says:

hi sarah ill take fresh scottish pheasant from deeside over in july for you if you wish regards frank

      • Jens Hörnicke says:

Yes i understand !? 😉 It`s verry importent to eat wild Birds .Bon aptit !

      • Sarah Springham says:

        Many thanks Peter and Frank.

    15. Mick Cundy says:

I say, how does one know if meat here is free range or not?
Particularly given that legislation regarding the marketing of such is different here.

    16. Karin Knabe says:

Waste of time. I can’t believe anybody serious discussing over weeks about a super market; special the ones not living here permanent. Lidl will be happy to get all the free publicity. Why don’t you do some charity work instead, at least your time would not be wasted.
