Update 2: As the transport strike enters its third day, there have been further violent incidents reported around Malta.

Earlier this morning a coach driver transporting FISEC Games athletes was forced off his vehicle and beaten near Zebbug, his keys were stolen and the coach left in the middle of the road.

In another incident fighting broke out between striking transport workers and policemen next to the Addolorata Cemetery, members of the special assignment group were dispatched to the scene to restore order.

Meanwhile, traffic in Marsa has been brought to a standstill due to striking workers blocking the main intersection. Police are diverting traffic away from the area “to avoid confrontations.”

Update: It would appear that the strikers are again trying to maximise disruption around Malta International Airport, after this mornings blockade at Marsa they are reported to be still blocking roads in the vicinity of the airport, whilst the police are attempting to divert traffic to other routes.

A number of departing tourists are reported to have missed their flights due to this ongoing traffic disruption.

Update 2: It has now been reported that the Valletta – Sliema Ferry has been suspended due to threats made to the ferry crews, leaving a number of passengers stranded in both localities.
