Gozo’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps, along with the Civil Protection Department have successfully participated in a recent EU funded project entitled ‘White Waters.’ The project, which was administered by the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps, involved two major training courses for members of both entities in white water rescue techniques.

The courses were conducted at the Rescue 3, United Kingdom and the National Life Saving Society in Rome, Italy.

The aim of the project was to expose the participants of the two organisations to specialised training in urban flooding rescue techniques, rescue of people from flooded vehicles and use of specialised watercrafts during rescues.

To this effect, the training programme proved to be beneficial for the Maltese Islands due to the same conditions which rescuers have to face during flash floods and rough seas. All members taking part in this project have undergone a series of preparatory training sessions locally prior to the training programme abroad.

The project was funded under the European Union Life long learning program Leonardo Da Vinci.
