FoetusWith reference to the Gift of Life Foundation campaign at entrenching the ban on abortion in the Maltese Constitution, Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party Chairperson, stated: “Alternattiva Demokratika has been clearly and openly against abortion, since the formation of the party in 1989. We have taken action publicly various times to maintain our stand.”

“For example, in June 1993, at the formation of the European Federation of Green Parties (EFGP), Alternattiva Demokratika presented an amendment against abortion to the then Guiding Principles of the EFGP. Later, on in the year, Alternattiva Demokratika ratified the Guiding Principles with the exception of the article mentioning abortion.”

“In 1995 our position was clearly spelled out in an article in The Times. In 1996, the Maltese Courts ordered George Pullicino to apologize on TVM for having stated that AD was in favour of abortion. The apology was carried on 24 October 2006 just before the final electoral debate on TV between Prime Minister Fenech Adami and Dr Alfred Sant.”

“In 2004, when new Guiding principles were adopted by the European Green Party (EGP), Alternattiva Demokratika officially ratified the Guiding Principles of the EGP, with the same reservations already highlighted in 1993, and our position was reiterated publicly various times.”

“Whilst therefore reaffirming our stand against abortion, Alternattiva Demokratika however does not consider it necessary to entrench its prohibition in the constitution. It does not make sense to start entrenching selected parts of the criminal code. After all, abortion is not the only crime which negates life. Are we to entrench the whole Criminal Code?”

Prof. Cassola concluded: “There is no controversy on this issue in our country since there is political consensus in Malta because all political parties are against abortion.”

On the topic of abortion, even many people who defend the possibility of legal abortions, they say they are not pro-abortion, but they don?t want to punish women who are in this difficult situation. In Germany a curious thing has happened. Something that reflects that legal abortion affects adversely to the country. And also that the change is possible: you can promote a culture of life with the support of the citizens, when really there is a real wish of avoid abortions. Since the liberalization of abortion in this country, the number of abortions is officially four million. For that reason, among others, children are seen as an unintended effect of having sex. Many people thought it was necessary to promote greater social acceptance of children in an aging society. And civil society acted, without waiting for action by the State to promote births. They joined several media organizations in a campaign. Interestingly, after the campaign, the birth rate has risen in Germany. The video is exciting.
