Social justice and the misleading information on voting - ADIn a press conference in front of Parliament, Michael Briguglio, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party Chairperson, said, “in parliament, AD will be the voice for social justice. We will propose an increase in the minimum wage and a drive for decent jobs rather than precariousness. We will propose real rights for persons with disability, including an increase in the disability pension and true accessibility. We will propose sustainable and decent pensions, and justice for pensioners who are being robbed of their full pension.

“Examples of this include ex-British Services pensioners, ex-Barclays and ex-Electricity Board pensioners. Inclusive education, the defence of public services and the welfare state will also be a top green priority, so as to ensure that poverty does not increase. We will also propose concrete measures to bring down the prices of medicines, with practices which are common in other EU countries with lower prices.”

Silvan Agius, AD candidate, said, “in this campaign AD has proved its credentials on social policy, which is both in touch with the needs of the people and also forward thinking drawing long term solutions based on tried and tested policies that give results. We don’t pay lip service to social justice, we have stood up for the rights of those who have experienced hardship because of the precarious nature of their jobs, and those people whose rights are not yet respected.”

Michael Briguglio concluded, “2,000 voters in a district can ensure that social justice is a parliamentary priority by voting AD. On the ballot sheet, AD voters can also move on to their preferred candidates of choice from other political parties.”

AD this morning also called upon the Electoral Commission to inform the general public about the voting procedure, including the possibility of voting for more than 1 party on the ballot sheet (cross-voting), and the way that votes are inherited whenever a candidate is eliminated or exceeds their quota.

“This in light of reports that the candidates of the two main political parties are misleading the general public about the voting procedure,” AD said.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chaiperson, said, “permitting deception about the voting system and failing to inform the public about their voting rights is tantamount to tampering with the electoral process and risks invalidating it.”

AD said that its Secretary General Ralph Cassar has contacted the OSCE Election Monitoring Mission in Malta and informed them of this serious issue.
