Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Friends of the Earth, NatureTrust and Ramblers Association said today that they have “joined forces in requesting answers from the leaders of each party as regards key environmental issues which have not been addressed satisfactorily up to now.”

The NGOs said that “leaders of the Nationalist Party, Labour Party and Alternattiva Demokratika, have, since Wednesday morning, been receiving emails from petitioners, asking them to clarify their party’s stand on these issues by pledging to protect Malta’s natural heritage, by halting the destruction of Malta’s urban trees, beautiful old gardens, countryside and unspoilt beaches, in favour of residents’ health and the heritage of future generations.”

“This petition is a follow-up to the petition about trees, and by this evening, about 3,000 people are expected to have signed on to the petition. The petitioners urge the political leaders that whichever party wins must think carefully about allowing developers to continue the rape of our islands,” the NGOs said.

“While the petitioners express dissatisfaction that 24,000 signatories of the Wied il-Ghasel campaign have been ignored, it is increasingly being felt that the FKNK accord with the PL is reminiscent of the eve-of-election pact agreed with the abusive Armier squatters prior to the 2008 elections.” the NGOs concluded, “this begs the question whether Maltese politicians are more receptive to advances by abusive lobbies, than to legitimate ones?”
