A report this week from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says that millions of jobs could be created worldwide in the next few decades by investment in alternative energy technologies.
Ralph Cassar, AD spokesperson for energy, industry and transport said: “This argument has been a key part of the European Greens’ strategy to combat climate change. The European Green Party has consistently argued that the EU and its member states must act quickly to grasp the opportunities for sustainable economic development and new jobs which are offered by the development of renewable energies. This report proves, for example, that investments in greater energy efficiency in buildings could generate between 2 and 3.5 million jobs in Europe and the United States by 2030. And it is worth pointing out that more energy efficient buildings bring the additional benefit of drastic cuts in the cost of heating and air conditioning, something we desperately need in Malta. The next budget should include programmes to incentivise alternative energy technologies, including programmes to help families generate their own clean electricity through incentive schemes. We also expect some real and tangible progress on AD’s proposal of Gozo as an eco-island.”
AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola added:”AD reiterates its call for a surcharge or energy pricing mechanism which ensures that the basic energy needs of everyone is affordable and which rewards those who use energy wisely. Those who waste should pay a higher price than those who use energy wisely. We are very pleased that unions such as the UHM are also calling for a revision in the surcharge mechanism according to consumption. For Alternativa Demokratika the environment means a better quality of life – government should lead the way. Malta is still a laggard when compared to the other EU countries; it is time for decisive action.”

Thanks AD for making us more consious of the need for Alternative Energy.
I cannot fathom why the present (or previous) government does not take this great idea of producing solar energy systems in Malta, It will contribute to the well being of all citizens, (besides the world population with less pollution) satisfy the EU requirements regarding pollution, create JOBS and support the national and personal economy.
In the present state of affairs solar heating for example is very expensive initially and houses are not built for efficient energy consuption. Those who have an old solar heating system may be wasting more energy than saving because there is no education on HOW to conserve energy. Real EDUCATION from experts is needed in this matter.
