Wirt Ghawdex in conjunction with the Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria recently organised a cultural event which took place at Il-Hagar – Heart of Gozo, in Victoria. The visitors were first given a special tour of the museum and were shown around in three groups by the museum’s curator, Mgr Joseph Farrugia, Mr Charles Cassar and Dr Paul George Pisani respectively.
Following the tour, Dr Pisani gave an interesting lecture on ‘Lent and Easter Customs’ in Gozo. The speaker discussed the various traditions which characterise this special period in the national calendar, starting from carnival to Easter Sunday.
The lecture was held on the upper floor of the museum, where the items of Statuary related to Holy week served as an excellent backdrop. The lecture was accompanied by visual aids prepared by professional photographer Daniel Cilia.
The next lecture organised by Wirt Ghawdex will be held in April by Dr Mario Saliba entitled ‘Infectious Diseases in Early 20th Century Gozo,’ at the Santa Cecilia Chapel in Ghajnsielem.
Dr Saliba studied at the Gozo Lyceum and the University of Malta graduating MD in 1982. In 1990 he obtained a post graduate Diploma in Medical Sciences (Diving Medicine) from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. In 2009 he finished a Masters Degree in Family Medicine at the University of Malta.
He is an avid rambler and published a guide book about country walks in Nadur. Dr Saliba is also a regular contributor in local media on various topics including Gozitan heritage. He practices as a General Practitioner and is a registered Specialist in Family Medicine, a Member of the Malta College of Family Doctors and a UK Sport Diving Medical Referee.
The lecture, which is open to the general public, is being held on Friday, the 12th of April, will be delivered in English and starts at 6.30pm.
There is only limited seating available and reservations are recommended, these can be made by e-mail to membership@wirtghawdex.org.
