A petition by a group called the European Union Citizens Against Discrimination will be presenting a petition addressed to the European Commission, Christian Bulzomi as well as all of Malta’s cabinet Ministers, on Thursday 9th May during EU Day
The petition, which the group said has now reached 1077 signatures and rising, “demands immediate action, by the European Commission against the Maltese Government for continued discrimination in respect of EU Nationals residing in Malta and the Domestic rate applied to many that incurs 35% and 60% respectively more for utilities than a Maltese National.
“It is in our opinion inexcusable that the Commission has allowed this practice to continue for so long.”
Reports of this petition have now reached the UK, with news of it in Sunday, 5th of May’s edition of the Daily Star, where it was called “Rip-off Malta.”
A Judicial Protest was filed in December by the ARMS Class Action group supported by EUCAD.
The group had been preparing to submit a case in the Maltese Courts “on behalf of a number of EU residents in Malta” who, the group said “have been charged significantly more for their electricity and water because their Maltese residency is not accepted by ARMS on the basis of their Identity Cards and often, other supporting documentation.”
