This month Maritime Squadron personnel participated in specialised training on cetaceans and turtles recognition.
Lectures were delivered by MEPA personnel and this initiative was organised together with the operations and training branch, Headquarters AFM.
The training was hosted at the Maritime Squadron’s lecture room facilities. There will be six similar sessions in total this year covering seagoing personnel from the Maritime Squadron. Six persons from BirdLife Malta Seabird Project also joined in for the training.
Maritime personnel from the Armed Forces of Malta often encounter turtles or sea mammals in distress while performing their military duties and such training is part of the AFM’s continued commitment towards marine preservation.
Over the past year AFM soldiers from the maritime squadron were managed to recover two wounded sea-turtles and handed them over to Nature Trust for further veterinary treatment.
