Following reports it received earlier this afternoon, Nature Trust (Malta) said in a statement this evening that is “shocked at the destruction of a garigue area, covering of an entrenchment and the obliteration of indigenous plants in Qawra in order to make way for an amusement park.

“The main plants in question in the garigue environment include the species Salicornia. This plant, called the glasswort in English is a halophytic (salt tolerating) shrub and is characteristic of coastal garigue where a rocky interface meets the sea.”

NTM said that “from the information given to to its council it appears that this activity has been given all the necessary permits by MEPA.

“It is appalling that land clearance in such a sensitive site has been given priority over the resident species of the site by the same authority that is supposed to be there to protect the environment.

The eNGO concluded by saying it “demands action by MEPA on such a destruction.”
