The Malta Union of Teachers recently hosted trade union leaders of Podkrepa, the second largest Trade Union for educators in Bulgaria. The delegation is led by Podkrepa President Mr Julian Petrov who is being accompanied by the Vice President Mr Georgi Shoshev, General Secretaries Ms Emilia Mircheva,and Ms Milena Mavrodieva together with EU affairs officer Ms Elena Nalbantova.

The visit is being carried out to strengthen collaboration between the two trade unions and to provide a snapshot of our educational system. This initiative follows a visit by a MUT delegation in Sofia earlier this year where Maltese educators had the opportunity to understand better the educational system and operation of Trade Unions in Bulgaria.

Visits are being held in schools in different sectors with the aim to share good practices and provide a link for future projects which shall be initiated between local and Bulgarian schools. On Tuesday, the delegation visited the Primary school in Qormi and the new girls school in Handaq. They were greeted by the College Prinicipal of St Ignatius College, the respective Heads of the two schools and teaching grades together with students.

This was followed by a visit with the two Director Generals of Education and a meeting with the MUT Council. The delgation visited Gozo on Wednesday where they were greeted by the Head of school, teaching grades and children at Victora Primary.

This was followed by a cultural tour of Gozo. The visit of the delegation was concluded on Thursday with school visits at St Albert the Great, St Martins’ College and meetings with the Church Secretariat for Education, the Principal of MCAST and the management of ITS.
