Animals for the Ta’ Qali petting farm and those at the Marsascala Park are to be moved to Ghammieri Farm, “as a precautionary measure until the necessary studies are carried out, as veterinary advice was not taken before the animals were housed there, “the Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights said today.
In a statement, the Parliamentary Secretary said that “as a result of rushed works by the previous administration for the Marasascala Park to be opened, no consultations were carried out on the conditions in which the animals are to be kept.” The studies that are to be carried out are intended to improve the conditions for animals at the park.
Referring to a donkey and a sheep which have sores and photos of which have appeared on social media sites, the secretariat said that “this type of sore is normal and the animals get them because they lay down in the same position all the time, or because they rub their skin against the ground. The animals are receiving treatment for this.”
The Secretariat said that it is working to “improve the shelters for the sheep and goats at the Marsascala Park. The rabbits have already been transferred from the park to Ghammieri to avoid further deaths and health problems. The rabbits at the Ta’ Qali Petting Farm is being closed temporarily for the summer.”
Inspections by vets are being carried out more frequently so that the animals’ health is continuously monitored, the Secretariat said.
