Armier judgement welcomed by Alternattiva DemokratikaCarmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party, “welcomed the judgement delivered this morning on the Armier illegal constructions.”

The court ruled that the construction on pubic land at Little Armier was illegal and caravan owners had no legal title to the land.

A letter sent in 2003 by the then Government informed Armier Developments Ltd it was ready to accept the construction of a number of units in the area subject to a number of conditions.

Mr Justice Anthony Ellul ruled that the letter was in fact an explanation of what the Government was proposing and could not be construed as a binding contract allowing persons who had illegally occupied land to continue occupying it.

AD said that it has during the past years campaigned actively for the demolition of the Armier shanty town. “In fact the issue even formed part of AD’s electoral manifesto for the March 2013 general elections.”

Carmel Cacopardo concluded that “the land next to the sea should be accessible to all and not to a select few. As the Minister responsible for the Lands Department, Joseph Muscat should call in the demolition people next Monday.”

The Armier issue has been used for too long as a votes issue by both political parties. What I would like to know is by what authority did Enemalta provide water and electricity services to this area? Anyway good to see a sensible decision being made by a Maltese court for a change. Since neither Government were prepared to listen to the people are they now going to ignore a court decision?
