The Parliamentary Secretary for Culture and Local Government, José Herrera, visited the Ggantija Temples on Thursday morning, where Heritage Malta is presently finalising the works on the new visitor centre and archaeological park.

The €2.3 million project, which includes the development of visitor infrastructure and considerable embellishment works in this World Heritage Site, is co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development.

Apart from the required ancillary facilities, the visitor centre will provide the necessary background and interpretation, including the display of unique artefacts found on site and the nearby Xaghra Stone Circle, to the thousands of visitors who visit this prime archaeological site every year.

From the visitor centre, the visitor will commence his voyage back in time towards the temple by means of a walkway designed in a way to help instigate a sense of appreciation and anticpation.

Dr Herrera visited the works, which are in their final stages, accompanied by Heritage Malta’s Chairman Dr Joseph Buttigieg. Dr Herrera stated that his visit bears witness to the importance of this project.

“This project is one of the highest quality. It is a gift that is being given to the people of Malta and Gozo as well as the tourists who visit our country so that everyone may benefit from this world heritage gem,” Dr Herrera said.
