High summer in Gozo means that the fruit and vegetables growing season is in full swing across the island. The many fields of beautiful tasty tomatoes are now being harvested. Local farmers and growers will be hoping that this summer will yield bumper crops.
This abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables all contribute to the mouth-watering Mediterranean cuisine that the many visitors to Gozo so enjoy.
According to figures from the National Statistics Office, in the first quarter of this year Gozitan farmers contributed 0.7 million kilogrammes of fresh fruit and vegetables, or 7.3 per cent of the total supply. The figures are almost identical to those of the same period in 2012 when Gozitan farmers contributed 0.7 million kilograms of fresh fruit and vegetables, or 7.8 per cent of the total supply.
The volume of fresh fruit and vegetables rose by 12.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, whereas the wholesale value declined by 1.9 per cent over the comparative quarter in 2012.
