An exhibition by Charles Dilo ‘A Glimpse Through Glass -Leaded glass in a new light’ is opening this weekend at ‘Ir-Rokna tal-Kreattività ma’ Amina Contin,’ in Gharb.

The exhbition opens this Sunday, the 11th of August and continues until Sunday, the 25th of August, every day (except Monday) from 4 pm to 9 pm. The artist will be there every day from 4pm till 6 pm showing his particular technique.

Charles Dilo was born in Scotland in 1946 of an artistic family. He retired to Gozo early 2010 and now lives in San Lawrenz having previously lived in Zebbug and Fontana.

He recently completed a leaded glass and fusion Arts Course in Gozo under Joseph Louis Melilak, the renowned master glass artist, and intends continuing later this year for a second term.

Prior to attending the course Charles was restoring old English leaded window panels, inserting copies of old master paintings using a technique he personally developed which benefits from the use of a frontal light source only.

The artist said, “It was the salvaging and restoring of around 20 old English leaded coloured glass panels and windows that first led me to develop a form of art using these items. Many had glass sections either missing or broken but with love and care I was able to bring them back to their former glory.

“My aim is to display the full brilliance of coloured glass using frontal light only and in most cases inserting reproduced old master paintings in order to produce an illusionary scene; in fact either looking out from a window or looking in.”

Charles continued, “under the master guidance of Joseph Louis Meilak, the renowned and respected Gozitan glass master, I was able to further my potential by actually producing new panels to my design. I plan to continue my studies for a second year with a view to incorporating the glass with stone, wood or metal.”
